Welsh Whisky Is One Of World’s Best
Penderyn Single Malt Welsh Whisky has established itself as one of the world’s best after winning a prestigious US award and being awarded one of the highest ratings of any whisky by the world’s most acclaimed whisky authority.
Penderyn Single Malt has been named “Microdistillery Whisky of the Year 2008” by the American “Malt Advocate” magazine just as the 2009 “Whisky Bible” is published scoring Penderyn Single Cask Rich Madeira Whisky at 96.5 out of 100, which places Penderyn among the top twenty in the world.
The Malt Advocate magazine awards, which are the oldest annual whisky awards in the world, recognise the greatest whiskies and distilleries as well as individuals who make and promote whisky. The Microdistillery Whisky of the Year category honours distillers making whisky in small quantities and Penderyn, which produces just two barrels a day and exports to the rest of the UK, Europe and North America, won the accolade despite competition from leading microdistilleries in Scotland, Ireland and the USA.
The judges said: “This was a difficult decision, given that there are some very impressive whiskies being distilled, but the product that most impresses us is Penderyn Welsh Whisky. It is surprisingly mature for its age; perhaps due in part to its unique copper distillation system. Penderyn is proof that new distilleries can produce a quality product and get it to market successfully within ten years.”
Wales’ only single malt’s status as one of the world’s best has also been recognised by Jim Murray, the acclaimed whisky authority, who has given Penderyn one of the highest ratings of any whisky produced in the world.
The author of the Whisky Bible 2009 awarded Penderyn’s Single Cask Madeira Whisky 96.5 out of 100 – just one mark behind the highest score of 97.5. Now in its sixth edition, Murray has tasted and reviewed 3800 whiskies and Penderyn is one of only 18 in the world to have scored 96.5 and above with just one scoring the highest mark of 97.5.
In his 2009 Whisky Bible, Jim Murray describes Penderyn as “a superstar whisky that gives us all a reason to live” and “A prince of a Welsh Whisky”.
The Single Cask Madeira Whisky is a limited edition of 180 bottles and the very first bottle produced was presented to HRH The Prince of Wales at the official opening of Penderyn’s visitor centre in June. It has an ABV of 54.3%.
Penderyn’s managing director, Stephen Davies said: “This award together with the critical acclaim from 2009 Whisky Bible author Jim Murray demonstrates that our single malt is truly a world class spirit which Wales can be exceptionally proud of.
“Penderyn is now available widely throughout the UK, Europe and North America and people who discover it for the first time are always impressed with the delicateness of the spirit and Penderyn’s unique style.
“Just four years after it was launched, Penderyn has earned its place as one of the best in the world and has proved it can hold its own against the most recognised and longest-established whiskies produced in Scotland, Ireland and the USA."
In the past month, the Welsh single malt has also won awards for architecture for its new visitor centre and for branding in the UK and earlier this year collected six medals in the International Wine and Spirit Competition 2008.
Penderyn has also featured in previous editions of the Whisky Bible scoring regularly in excess of 90 marks out of 100 for its flagship Madeira Finished whisky and other expressions of the spirit.
